LAP Respite Center has openings for Care Providers who will care for children and/or adults of all ages who may have disabilities, chronic illness, emotional/behavioral concerns, challenging behaviors or age related conditions, and their families. Examples are persons with Autism, cognitive delays, Cerebral Palsy, stroke, brain injury, etc... This is a temporary, part-time position. Hours are available 7 days per week, 24 hours per day. Typical hours are between 3pm-10pm. Care Providers with more flexible schedules are able to work 35 - 40 hours weekly.
Duties & Responsibilities include: following personalized care plans for persons of all ages, activity planning, social needs, therapies, personal hygiene; including diapering, bathing, dressing, feeding, (some feeding tubes), daily documentation/record keeping, lifting and transferring, giving medications, breathing treatments, involvement in the community.
Location: Respite care can take place at our Respite House (Lansing), our After School Program (Lansing), and in the family's home (Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counites).
Minimum Requirements to meet State of Michigan Licensing: Dependable transportation and a good driving record, three references, health screen & TB test (within the previous 12 months of date of hire), proof of high school graduation or GED, Internet access, email address, and working phone. Copy of drivers license, social security card and auto insurance is needed. CPR & First Aid must be obtained before or within 60 days of hire. Employment will not start until all requirements are presented.
Additional Requirements:
- Complete LAP training session 1 in the LAP office 8:00 a.m. until 5 p.m.
- Complete LAP training session 2 in the LAP office (3 hours) to learn policies, procedures and paperwork
- 11 - 15 hours of on the job shadowing
- Transfer Techniques and Body Mechanics classes
- Respite Training certifcate (can be obtained through www.respitecourse.ca) Work at your own rate. It will take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours to complete depending on your level of experience / training.
All training is paid after completing 80 working hours. Reimbursement for the Respite Training is available after 80 working hours.
Additional notes: All scheduling is completed on the internet. You need to have access to the internet to check schedules, notices, and messages daily. Most communication is done via email. Back ground and driver records are checked.

The ideal applicant will be male or female and have good people skills, patient, caring, work as a team, hard worker, self starter and be able to work without constant supervision. Sign language skills are a plus. It is mandatory that care providers are available to work at least 15-20 hours per week, including a minimum of one weekend per month.
